Alexander Croal.

Alexander Croal, my 1st cousin 3x removed. He was my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Croal’s cousin.

Born: 1878, Scotland.
Arrived: 1883, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
Died: 1916, Sydney. Aged 38.

He was part of the 19th Battalion of Newtown, NSW. He enlisted on 14 May 1915 (see enlistment form below). He left Australia for Egypt with the 2nd Reinforcements in June 1915. After 4 months at Gallipoli, Alexander was hospitalized with jaundice but later contracted pulmonary tuberculosis whilst in hospital at Helopolis. He was sent back to Australia in January, but died at the 4th General Hospital in Randwick, NSW on 14 July 1916.

I'm related to my best friend.

Very distantly that is. I discovered this a couple of weeks ago.

According to Ancestry.com.au, Lucy is the Great Great Great Niece of the Husband of the Aunt of the Husband of my 1st Cousin Twice Removed.

A little bit complicated right? Haha. Lucy’s family come from the North Coast of New South Wales, while mine come from the Mid North Coast. I always wondered if there was a connection somewhere, and turns out there is!

Who are the ancestors that connect us? Well…

One of my Nanna’s cousins was Amy Grace. Amy married William Bailey. William's Aunt was Sarah Sneesby. Sarah married Francis William Ellem. Francis was the brother of Hercules Ellem…Lucy’s Great Great Grandfather!

William Bailey’s Uncle Henry Sneesby also married Louisa Ellem, Hercules & Francis’ cousin.

They married in 1885 at Nambucca, NSW. They had 6 children - the 2nd being my Great Grandmother Eva. Elizabeth died during the birth of her youngest child, her namesake, Elizabeth Lucilla Mackay.

I found this photo last week. It is the first photo I have ever seen of them together, and of Elizabeth. Just beautiful! I'm unsure whether this photo is of their wedding.
